A Lubbock native was one of the most influential rock n’ rollers of all time. Brandishing the iconic glasses, Buddy Holly defined what it meant to be a singer-songwriter. Although his career only lasted a year and a half, before a tragic plane crash claimed his life too soon, Holly was able to produce a sizable body of work during that span, all of which is commemorated at the Buddy Holly Center located at his home town. The museum contains Holly memorabilia and a fine arts gallery, located on the appropriately named ‘Crickets Avenue’.
Fun facts found at the museum:
–       Holly introduced the traditional rock-and roll line up of two guitars, bass, and drums.
–       The Beatles claimed that they wouldn’t exist without Holly’s influence.
–       Although Elvis sold far more records and was the most popular artist of the decade, Holly is more respected for writing nearly all of his songs.
–       Dixie Chicks singer Natalie Maines shares Holly’s hometown, and paid tribue to the “Peggy Sue” singer with the song “Lubbock or Leave It”.
